What We’re All About

Westchester Community College was founded in 1946 as the New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in White Plains. In 1957, the County of Westchester bought the 360-acre John Hartford estate in Valhalla and designated 218 acres for the community college. Today SUNY WCC is the county’s largest educational institution, with a focus on community, affordability, and career-focused academics. No matter where you are in life, our mission is to empower you to create your own success story. Diversity Statement: Westchester Community College fosters an intentionally inclusive campus culture that celebrates and respects the diversity of the community while acknowledging the differences among the lived experiences of individuals. The college will promote equity, disseminate knowledge, and take visible actions to remove barriers to access and advancement that adversely affect individuals from marginalized communities.

Mission, Vision, Values

Westchester Community College provides accessible, high quality and affordable education to meet the needs of our diverse community. We are committed to student success, academic excellence, workforce development, economic development and lifelong learning.

Freedom of Expression Statement

The core principles of Westchester Community College are rooted in the ability to create avenues for intellectual pursuits which require open, free, and thoughtful debate. The strength of the institution is its ability to open minds, regardless of the personal leanings of individuals in our community. To do that, we push our students and others out of their comfort zone and engage in respectful discourse. It is through these experiences that we challenge our own assumptions and beliefs and ultimately learn in a thoughtful way. The institution is committed to the fostering of a campus climate that equitably supports the diversity inherent in our modern, pluralistic society. Our academic communities encourage critical inquiry and the free expression of diverse opinions for the creation of effective and inclusive learning environments. We call upon all members of our academic communities—faculty, staff, and students—to not only engage in, but to encourage, civil discourse. This will enable the exchange of ideas, however uncomfortable, thus furthering the crucial mission of public higher education to contribute to the greater good. This policy, endorsed by the Westchester Community College Board of Trustees, is based on the Joint Statement on Civil Discourse and Campus Climate as adopted by the SUNY Faculty Council of Community Colleges and SUNY University Faculty Senate. Our college motto, Building Minds and Building Futures, is a reminder of how we prepare students for career and transfer opportunities that lie ahead. Our seal contains the phrase Sapere Aude – the Latin phrase meaning “Dare to Know” – which reflects our commitment to knowledge and learning as keys that unlock the door to that future. Together, these ideas guide our work to strengthen our society, prepare our students as contributors, and achieve higher pursuits.
