Federal Pell Grants are awarded to undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor’s or a professional degree. Pell Grants are based on financial need as determined by your FAFSA application. Application for this award must be made for each academic year by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
Effective on July 1, 2012, you can receive the Federal Pell Grant for no more than 12 semesters or the equivalent (roughly six years). In response to your FAFSA, you’ll receive a “comment” by the government on your Student Aid Report (SAR) concerning how much Pell grant you have used. If you have any questions, contact your financial aid office.
Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) grants are for undergraduate students who have not earned a Bachelor’s degree. These grants are awarded to students with the greatest need with priority given to students who are PELL grant recipients. Efforts are made to help students obtain enough aid to meet their basic institutional costs (tuition, fees and books). Since aid is awarded on a rolling basis, every effort is made to award FSEOG to the neediest students within each packaging cycle. Students taking at least 3 academic credits may be eligible for FSEOG.
Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants are for students who are not eligible for a Pell Grant, but whose parent or guardian was a member of the U.S. Armed Forces and died as a result of service performed in Iraq or Afghanistan after September 11, 2001 may be eligible to receive the Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant.
Federal Grant Resources
Undergraduate students who haven’t earned a bachelor’s or professional degree may be eligible for Federal Pell Grants, which are based on financial need determined by the FAFSA, and limited to 12 semesters. The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is for undergraduates with significant financial need, prioritizing Pell Grant recipients and covering essential institutional costs. Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants are available to students not eligible for Pell Grants, whose parent or guardian died in military service in Iraq or Afghanistan after 9/11.
